da betsson: Chelsea kicked off the Liam Rosenior era in London with a 5-1 win against Championship Charlton Athletic in the FA Cup on Saturday night.

da mrbet: Goals from Jorrel Hato, Tosin Adarabioyo, Marc Guiu, Pedro Neto, and Enzo Fernandez secured the win for the Premier League giants, who will find out their fourth-round opponents on Monday.

Before the match, Rosenior said that he would “learn” a lot about his team in the game against Charlton, and that may be true after seeing how some of his players performed.

For example, the former Strasbourg and Hull head coach should have learned that Alejandro Garnacho should not start the League Cup semi-final clash with Arsenal next time out.

Why Alejandro Garnacho should be dropped

The summer signing from Manchester United was given the opportunity to impress as a starter on the left flank against lower league opposition, yet still failed to prove his quality at the top end of the pitch.

Garnacho ended his 85 minutes on the pitch with no ‘big chances’ created, no dribbles completed, and no shots on target, per Sofascore, which speaks to how ineffective he was in the final third.

His best contribution to the game was a six-yard pass to Facundo Buounanotte, whose effort from the edge of the box rebounded back to Guiu for a tap-in, as shown in the clip above.

Neto did more, by scoring the fourth goal in the game, in eight minutes on the pitch, including additional time, than Garnacho did in 85 minutes on the left wing, which is why the Portugal international should come straight back into the team against Arsenal.

The Chelsea flop who was worse than Garnacho

However, Garnacho was not the worst performer on the pitch for the Blues. There was a Chelsea flop who started and should be instantly sold by Rosenior in the January transfer window.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Benoit Badiashile made just his ninth appearance of the season in all competitions, per Sofascore, against Charlton, and his performance should be enough for the club to finally part ways with him.

The French defender, who made an error that led to a goal in Chelsea’s last defeat to Aston Villa at the end of 2025, put in a shaky display against a Championship team, which is concerning.

He was somewhat fortunate to still be on the pitch heading into the break. Already on a yellow card, he was called for a foul for holding onto his marker, which may have been a yellow had he not already been booked. Content creator Alex Goldberg went as far as to describe his play as “reckless”, comparing it to Marc Cucurella’s red card against Fulham.

Chelsea podcaster Nick Verlaney backed up Goldberg’s criticism with a post that said Badiashile was “so bad” that he needed to be substituted during the first half.

As you can see in the table above, Tosin was the superior performer out of the experienced pair on the night, and that is without taking his goal into account.

Badiashile may have won 75% of his aerial duels, but that does not tell the full story. Charlton won the corner that they scored from because the French defender lost the flight of the ball and was dominated aerially to create a chance for the hosts, which Hato blocked behind for the corner.

He was even worse than Garnacho, who had a quiet night without doing anything significantly wrong, because of almost being sent off and making an error in the build-up to Charlton’s goal.

The left-footed flop also produced the performance in the graphic above against Aston Villa in one of his recent performances, which means that he has had poor displays in two of the last three matches, in between the 1-1 draw with Manchester City.

Given that he has only played 11 times in the Premier League since the start of last season, it should finally be time for the Blues to sell the defender this window, if there are any teams willing to snap him up before the end of the month.

Better than Palmer: Chelsea prepare approach for "generational" £115m star

Chelsea are reportedly interested in a deal to sign a star who is even better than Cole Palmer.

ByDan Emery

He has failed to prove himself to be a reliable performer when called upon and should look for regular game time elsewhere, as his displays for the Blues do not suggest that he will become a key player for Rosenior any time soon.
